UNDP HELPS COMBAT ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES AND FOSTER THE ROAD TO RESILIENCE IN EASTERN GHOUTA'S LANDSCAPE
UNDP rehabilitated sewage networks in four towns in Eastern Ghouta, helping 68,000 people. The project also includes rehabilitating irrigation networks and building a cutting-edge water treatment station. This initiative will seamlessly integrate the treatment station with the existing sewage network, making it easier to purify water. The treated water will then be channeled into the revitalized irrigation networks, providing a reliable source of water for sustainable agriculture.
UNFPA IS WORKING WITH YOUTH TO SUPPORT ADAPTATION RESPONSES TO CLIMATE CHANGE
Syria hosted its first local conference for youth on climate change this September. The conference provided a platform for young people to exchange ideas and solutions on climate change and its impact on their future. It also gave young people a chance to raise their voices and present proposals, which will be presented at the Regional Youth Conference and then the World Youth Conference. The conference was organized by YOUNG GO, SANAD, and other local NGOs, with support from UNFPA.
REPAIRING THE PRIMARY ROAD TO THE MAIN MARKET IN DAR'A HAS IMPROVED THE COMMUNITY'S LIVELIHOOD
“The road was destroyed, and people were afraid to pass through because it was dark and dangerous,” said Walid, a resident in Dar'a city. “But after the road was repaired and solar lights were installed, people feel safer and can now move around more easily. Life is returning to normal in the area,” he added. Walid and many more have benefited from the project implemented jointly by UN-Habitat and UNDP under the UN Joint Programme. The project of rehabilitating the road to the market in Dar'a has made people feel safer and has restored livelihood opportunities and employment. UN-Habitat, together with other agencies of the UN Joint Programme, is supporting resilience in the areas of need.

UNHCR REPAIRS A RURAL ASSEMBLY MARKET IN HELFAYA, HAMA GOVERNORATE
“I’m happy to be back working in the market where I’m earning a decent income,” says Mohamed, a father of three children.
UNHCR Syria and partners repaired the rural assembly market in Halfaya, Hama, which has 34 shops, mostly selling agriculture products. The market supports about 4,500 farmers and 100 workers. The project has boosted local businesses and is creating employment and encouraging farmers to cultivate their lands.
UNICEF AND PARTNERS CONTINUE HELPING CHILDREN TO GET BACK TO LEARNING AS THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR BEGINS
As the new school year started in early September, UNICEF has continued to reach children across Syria with a variety of education services and supplies in both formal and informal settings. In the earthquake-affected areas, UNICEF helped repair and rehabilitate more than 250 schools, allowing them to safely reopen for the new school year.
UNICEF also continues to run an accelerated learning programme, Curriculum B, for children who have been out of school for a long time. This programme allows students to combine two academic years into one and catch up with their peers. For children who lack access to a classroom, UNICEF's Self-Learning Programme provides them with a set of books covering basic subjects. Students can study at home or at a community centre with the help of a parent or caregiver.
UNMAS CONDUCTS A FIELD VISIT TO A UNDP DEBRIS REMOVAL PROJECT SITES IN ALEPPO
As part of the earthquake operational plan, the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) in Syria conducted a field visit in September with the implementing partner Safety Solutions to one of UNDP’s debris removal project sites in Aleppo. UNMAS assessed the worksite to identify the presence or absence of explosive ordnance and ensure the safety and security of the project workers.
UNRWA REOPENS A SCHOOL IN YARMOUK CAMP BRINGING HOPE TO THE DEVASTATED CAMP
For the first time in 11 years, Palestine refugee students in Yarmouk camp are going back to school. To help children prepare, UNRWA distributed school bags and basic stationery; the students also received psychosocial support to develop their social and emotional capacities and support their well-being.
With a generous contribution from the Government of Italy, UNRWA was able to rehabilitate the school, which will run on a double-shift basis and will serve more than 1,000 students. The new school building provides a protective and safe environment for students.
ILO CONDUCTS A TRAINING OF TRAINERS FOR TRIPARTITE PARTNERS ON OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH IN SYRIA
From 17-21 September, the International Labour Organization (ILO) held a training of trainers on occupational health and safety (OSH) targeting the construction sector in Aleppo. The training gave participants the expertise they needed to identify, assess, control and prevent occupational hazards and risks in various economic sectors, especially construction. This is important as the construction work is often dangerous, and several fatal occupational accidents have occurred since the earthquake.
The training aims to help create a safe and healthy work environment for construction workers.
SYRIA HUMANITARIAN FUND HAS LAUNCHED ITS FIRST STANDARD ALLOCATION
The Syria Humanitarian Fund has launched its first Standard Allocation of 2023 to mitigate the impact of winter conditions in underserved areas. The interventions will focus on addressing immediate needs and enhancing the early recovery and resilience of people in areas with high needs.
WHO DEPLOYS MOBILE TEAMS TO DEIR-EZ-ZOR TO PROVIDE ESSENTIAL HEALTH SERVICES IN EMERGENCY
In response to the emergency in Deir-ez-Zor, the World Health Organization (WHO) has deployed six mobile teams to provide primary, secondary, maternal and mental health services to the affected people in the area. The teams also provide facilitated referrals to secondary care and ensure access to safe water.
The teams focus on serving the needs of internally displaced people, mainly women and children, who make up a large percentage of the internally displaced population.
